San Jose Children's Discovery Museum, San Jose, CA
Dr. Northon has spent the last several years volunteering her time in local public
schools where she has gained considerable experience in teaching geography to youngsters.
She has also created an extensive array of geography and mapping curriculum. In the
summer of 1996, she worked with part of the educational staff at the San Jose Children's
Discovery Museum to advise them on a mapping exhibit entitled "Take a Look Around".
Additionally, she taught a geography inservice session to local teachers that was
sponsored by the museum.
The Exploratorium, San Francisco, CA
In 1991, Dr. Northon collaborated with the Exploratorium on a navigation and wayfinding
display entitled "Finding Your Way". Her input was on two topics: Chinese
cartography and navigation and geography projects suitable for children. She later
published an article, "Paper Worlds: Maps vs. Reality" in the companion
publication, Finding Your Way: Navigation Essays from the Exploratorium, 1992.
